Yuan Shi

Shi Yuan was born in Canton in 1984. Before graduated from The University of Portsmouth as first class honour in BA (Hons) Graphic Design, he has his technical training for visual communication at Design Factory International, ZhuHai (DFI) for 2 years. He has huge passion for visual communication, both print and motion, and particular interest in typography, after obtained the membership of International Society of Typographic Designers and Charted Society of Designers, he is now working and living in London. His recent publications include “Simply pattern” by Visionary, “ELLE decor” Magazine May issue, "Invitation & Promotion Design–Idea with impact" by MaoMao publishing.

Heat-sensitive wall paper
This project tries to explore a new definition of decoration which brings life to design. Several objects were chosen for demonstration: a heat–sensitive wallpaper which the flowers on it will be blooming when the radiator is on, a double-layered cutting matte and ruler which will reveal the red layer when they are cut etc. It explores the sentimentality of decoration and how it affects people feeling.

Identity of Magic Club- 2007 istd student assessment scheme
Identity for a magic club that targets teenagers. Design promotes the sense of mystery and secrecy of the traditional art in an contemporary style. Items including stationary, visual toolkit and a promotional brochure.


Show identity 2007
This identity was created for Summer Show of University of Portsmouth. The school is re-branded as a light bulb manufacturer: invitation as a small size light bulb packed with a slip of info, etc. It also features the gift-wrap substrate which largely reduced the cost due to a low budget.

Sympathetic Mapping
This poster was designed for a mapping project concerning monologue and time. It features the theory of time displacement which the animation is divided into 1000 sections and the time of each section is shifted according to the monologue.

Folding Calendar
This calendar explores the way how dates are displayed. It features die-cut card which allows the user to view the schedule of a particular week while still maintaining the visibility of current date.
