CDR Animation Showreel 2009

CDR Animation Showreel 2009
- After the Effects: the complex relationship between talents and London animation industry
Curated and produced by the Chinese Designers’ Region (CDR), “CDR Animation Showreel 2009” is a collection of 13 animated short films and promos, which were early animation works created by CDR animation directors. Showcased at the Asian Youth Animation & Comic Competition in China this summer, the showreel is being shown for the first time to audiences in London. Led by Ann Xiao and EB Hu, CDR has always been dedicated to the field of animation. We are delighted to invite you to the special screening and talks “After the Effects”.
5 CDR animation directors will discuss their experiences and thoughts: “What does the animation industry currently look for in its creative workforce?”; “What must a student do to become a director?”. Our special critic is Christian Hogue, founder and producer of Lost in Space and mentor to two CDR animation directors Ann and Oway. Well-known as having a special eye for spotting raw talents and supporting them to success in the industry, Christian is invited to a roundtable discussion with the directors about the complex relationships between the emerging talents and the existing industry. The event will be held in the studio of HuntHaggarty, which is a branding strategy company whose clients include Harrods, Dell and Motorola. Recently HuntHaggarty just opened its Hongkong studio and published an outstanding book of ‘China’s Creative Voice’ about Chinese youth culture.

Lost in Space
Lost in Space is a digital film studio with an ongoing series of experimental shorts, ‘The Deep’, ‘Sound Engine’, ‘3space’ which screened at the ICA in London and across the UK as part of the onedotzero film festivals. In addition, Lost in Space produce images and spreads for print media, such as Dazed and Confused, US glossy fashion magazine, BIG and the digital bible Wired. Lost in Space continue to apply a fresh and tailored approach to every project they work on. Lost in Space worked on many ground breaking spots and feature films.
Christian Hogue, Founder and producer of Lost in Space
Christian is a native New Zealander who came to the fair shores of England one cold wet day in Oct. 1984. He had an honors degree in computer science and keen interest in computer graphics and film. By 1986 Christian had joined one of London’s top post production companies “The Moving Picture Company” in their fledgling 3D department and within a year was head of the department.
In the late 80’s Christian decided to cut the strings and spent 2 years as an independent consultant and 3d supervisor travelling the world. Returning to England in 1990 Christian was looking to setup his own studio and became the first 3d company with-in an established post company at Rushes. Installing the latest Alias 3d animation system the embryonic “lost In Space” quickly went on to produce groundbreaking photorealistic character animation with the famous Lyons Tea Pot Spot.
Since 1997 Christian has been evolving lost in space to the become a digital film studio designing and producing bleeding edge imagery for any medium. This includes high-end commercials, titles and idents for TV, film, print and nu-media. Since their inception, the pool of talent at Lost in Space has steered the company in the direction of digital illustration as well as moving image digital film production. Lost in Space are especially recognised as pioneers in their use of wireframing techniques. Whatever the field, the consistent themes maintained by Lost in Space’s work are it’s intrinsic uniqueness, stylistic edge and foresight.
