The remains of urban expansion
城市扩张中遗存的图像考察
— a photographic observation by Haibo YU, 45mins
The remains of urban expansion is a photographic observation by a Chinese well-known documentary photographer Haibo YU on China’s current urban development. Yu makes large-scale photographs (10cm*8cm positive film), trying to capture the memories remained in the disjuncture of time and space, as a result of the dramatic urban expansion. From the costal line to inland, cities have been gradually eating out the villages. His photos provide wildest imagination of any factors that may affect human being’s future living space.
The ‘New’ in ‘Translation’ Travelling of Architectural Concepts from the West into Modern China
“新”的转译:从西方到中国建筑概念的跨文化之旅
By Hua LI, 45mins
This presentation is part of Li’s PhD thesis, which concerns ‘conceptual translation’ of architectural discourses between the English-speaking context and the Chinese-speaking context. One of the arguments of the thesis is that the history of modern Chinese architecture in the twentieth century was a history of systematic ‘misreading’ of importations from Europe and the USA. The ‘new’ is one of the categories to decode this ‘misreading’, in regard to its association with the concept ‘western modern’.
