William Hailiang Chen

Born in Hainan, William Hailiang Chen graduated from The Architectural Association School of Architecture in 2006. Past exhibitions include a solo photography exhibition, ‘The Penetration of Light’ at The AA Photo Libray in 2003. He has worked for Wilkinson Eyre Architects in London, where he was part of the design team for the Guangzhou West Tower. (Now currently under construction) His project ‘Reef Surface Mobile Island’ creatively adopts the fabric casting concrete has been highly recommended by the judges of International Concrete Design Competition 2006 and has won 1st prize on ‘Environmental Tectonics’ competition. Recently, his collaboration project ResoNet has won 1st prize on Bright LED competition. His interests are on the interplay between geometry, material and digital fabrication. Currently he is working for HOK Sport Ltd. on London Olympic 2012 Stadium design. His works have been exhibited in UK, Spain, Korean and China.

ResoNet visualises the resonant frequencies inherent in the natural environment, via the interaction of the public and surrounding elements detected by a LED net. ResoNet explores the boundaries between nature, art and technology; to create emergent physical & ephemeral conditions. ResoNet won 1st prize in Bright LED international competition co-organized by Designboom and Gwangju Biennale Foundation, Korea.
